ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Popular supermarket chain Wegmans is warning customers of a coupon scam circulating social media.

Facebook users began sharing a post saying that the store was giving away a free $200 grocery coupon. Customers would have to click the link and follow a series of steps to obtain the coupon.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 5.44.42 PMA spokesperson for the Rochester-based grocery store debunked the post, urging customers to stay away.

"This giveaway is neither affiliated with nor supported by Wegmans, a statement issued Monday read. "We’re actively working to have this fraudulent post removed from Facebook."

There is no indication yet what harm clicking the link would do to your computer or Facebook account.

Wegmans has stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

Coupon scams have made rounds on social media for stores including Best Buy, Macy's and Walmart. Hackers create the fake posts to obtain personal information from users.

The Better Business Bureau says few businesses can afford to give away $50 gift cards for completing a few questions.

Consumers should also be aware that legitimate businesses do not ask for credit card numbers or banking information through customer surveys. If a company asks for personal information such as an address or email, check for a privacy link.
